The objective

What this system is built to do

LinkedIn is the only paid channel where you can reach a buying committee by name. The teams that win run Thought Leader Ads to warm the dark funnel, Document Ads + Lead Gen Forms to convert, and Dreamdata to attribute spend to pipeline -- not to leads.

Warm before you convert. Build the dark-funnel retargeting pool with Thought Leader Ads and Document Ads, then run conversion campaigns only against the warm audience -- CPL drops 40-50% vs cold. Attribution lives in Dreamdata or HockeyStack, not LinkedIn's 7-day window. Not doing: single-image brand ads to cold job-title audiences, or pushing demo offers to people who've never seen us.

How it runs

The steps your team follows

The workflow, exactly as it runs inside . It plays through step by step, or pick any node on the map.

Start
1

Build the ICP audience

Monthly
  1. Define the ICP segment: industry, company size (employee band), seniority, region. Keep each Campaign Manager campaign to one tight segment.
  2. Pull the matching account list from using saved search filters. Export to CSV.
  3. Upload the CSV as a Matched Audience in Campaign Manager (Account List). Requires >=300 matched accounts to activate -- aim for 1,000+.
  4. Install the site-wide if not already live -- website-visitor retargeting depends on it.
  5. Human approval -- confirm the segment definition and account list before launching any ads.
2

Warm with Thought Leader Ads

Weekly
  1. Choose the Thought Leader sender: the founder, lead practitioner, or a recognisable subject-matter expert -- not the brand page.
  2. Create a Thought Leader Ad in : boosted from the individual's profile, educational or opinion content (no product pitch).
  3. Budget: ~300-500 GBP/week per segment on awareness. Frequency cap <=3 impressions/member/week.
  4. Run for 2-3 weeks before launching any conversion campaign. Video ads: viewers >=50% become the first retargeting layer automatically.
  5. Track warm-pool growth: target 600+ members (video viewers + ad engagers + site visitors) before moving to conversion.
  6. Refresh creative every 2 weeks -- frequency fatigue on a narrow ICP list is fast.
3

Convert with Document Ads + Lead Gen Forms

Weekly
  1. Create a Document Ad: a 6-10 page PDF -- benchmark report, checklist, or case study. Gated with a (pre-fills name, email, title, company).
  2. Target only the warm retargeting pool (video viewers >=50%, ad engagers, Insight Tag site visitors from the ICP window). Do NOT run this campaign cold.
  3. Objective: Lead Generation. Bid strategy: Maximum Delivery (let LinkedIn optimise). Daily budget: 50-150 GBP/day.
  4. Exclude LinkedIn Audience Network on conversion campaigns -- it adds noise.
  5. Human approval -- approve the Document Ad creative and Lead Gen Form field set before launch.
  6. Benchmark: expect 10-15% form completion rate. If below 8%, test a new lead magnet or tighten the audience.
4

Re-engage stalled accounts

Bi-weekly
  1. Pull the list of accounts that engaged with Document Ads but did not book (form fill -> no downstream CRM activity in 14 days).
  2. Run a to the named buyers at those accounts. Offer 2-3 CTA paths: watch a 5-min demo, read a relevant case study, book a 20-min call.
  3. Conversation Ads send as a LinkedIn message from a named sender -- use the same practitioner as the Thought Leader Ad for consistency.
  4. Budget: ~200-400 GBP/week. Target impression frequency <=2/member/week.
  5. Stop the sequence for any contact who replies, books, or opts out.
  6. escalate any account with multiple Conversation Ad engagements but no booking -- hand to sales for direct outreach.
5

Attribute spend to pipeline

Weekly
  1. Ingest LinkedIn Ads data into (or ) via the certified LinkedIn Ads API integration. Set attribution window to 30-day click + 7-day view -- LinkedIn's default 7-day click window misses 70%+ of B2B journeys.
  2. Map every lead-form fill and MQL back to the LinkedIn campaign, ad creative, and buying-committee member (job title) that first touched it.
  3. Calculate attributed CPL and attributed cost-per-opportunity per campaign. Kill any campaign where attributed pipeline CPL exceeds 3x your ACV fraction.
  4. Pull the account-level signal: which target accounts had >=2 buying-committee members touch an ad this week? Flag for sales follow-up.
  5. Export the weekly attribution summary. Human approval -- review before pausing any campaigns.
6

Score, cut & iterate

Weekly
  1. Review Dreamdata / HockeyStack dashboard: which campaigns, creatives, and audience segments produced pipeline-attributed opportunities?
  2. Cut campaigns with high CPL but zero pipeline (even if MQL count looks fine -- LinkedIn MQLs without downstream pipeline are vanity).
  3. Double down on the segments and creatives that produced attributed pipeline: increase budget, duplicate the ad set, build a Lookalike Audience from matched closed-won accounts.
  4. Update the ICP segment definition and the Matched Audience CSV with new closed-won + disqualified accounts. Re-upload monthly.
  5. Feed sharpened ICP and creative learnings back into the Thought Leader Ad warm-up cadence.
  6. Log the decision: which segment won, which creative won, what the attributed CPL was.

Thought Leader Ads cut cost-per-click by 80% vs brand single-image

LinkedIn is a professional social network -- people engage with people, not logos. Run awareness and education campaigns from a real practitioner's profile, not the brand page. The brand follows; the face leads.

A/B split (sender: brand page vs founder)n approx 1,800 impressions/week per variant6 weeks

Switching from landing pages to Lead Gen Forms cut CPL by 35%

On mobile LinkedIn traffic (60%+ of impressions), every extra tap kills conversions. A native Lead Gen Form removes the load-time, the typing, and the leave-the-platform friction in one move. Switch MOFU campaigns to Lead Gen Forms; keep landing pages only for BOFU retargeting where the prospect is already motivated.

Building the warm pool first cut cost-per-demo by 46%

LinkedIn Ads CPL is not fixed -- it's a function of audience temperature. A 3-week warm-up phase costs roughly 400-600 GBP in Thought Leader Ad impressions and pays back in the first week of the conversion campaign. Build the warm pool before you push for the conversion; don't cold-sell on a professional network.
